Local newsrooms lost readers when they stopped answering them. Five small habits can win some of that trust back: publish corrections in the same place, name the reporter, show where the numbers came from, reply to letters, and say what you do not know yet.
None of these need a big budget. They need a rule that everyone on the desk follows, and a page where readers can see the rule.
